Brtonigla — Where Istria’s four soils meet
North-western Istria · Croatia

Four soils. One extraordinary Istria.™

Between the Mirna valley and the Adriatic, Brtonigla is a small territory with an unusually deep sense of place: vineyards on four distinct Istrian soils, family cellars, quiet stone villages, a hidden canyon, a monumental cave and the sea at Karigador.

A destination that reveals itself slowly

Brtonigla does not compete through scale. Its strength is concentration. In just 32.72 km², all four soil types found in Istria meet — red, white, grey and black — creating a rare terroir story that can be tasted in wine, olive oil and the food of the landscape.

The municipality stretches from green inland hills toward the coast. That transition shapes the journey: morning among vines and olive groves, a cool descent into Mramornica, a walk through Škarline, and sunset by the Adriatic. Brtonigla is best experienced as a sequence of intimate places rather than a checklist.

The four soils are the story

In 2010 local Malvasia was planted in comparable microclimates on four different soils. The resulting wines showed distinct sensory profiles — a simple, memorable way to understand terroir. The experiment later extended to Teran and inspired work with olive oil.
