The Four Soils of Brtonigla
Terroir · Four soils

The landscape, tasted.

Brtonigla’s most distinctive tourism story begins beneath your feet. All four principal Istrian soil types meet within the municipality, making the landscape a natural classroom for wine, olive oil and agriculture.

Four colours, four expressions

Istria’s red, white, grey and black soils differ in geology, drainage and mineral composition. Around Brtonigla they occur within a compact territory, allowing visitors to move from one character of landscape to another in a matter of kilometres.

The Four Soils project made that difference tangible. Malvasia was planted under closely comparable conditions and vinified in the same way. The wines remained recognisably Istrian, yet expressed the ground differently. That idea is more powerful than a tasting note: it turns Brtonigla itself into the experience.

From Malvasia to Teran — and beyond

After Malvasia, the concept was extended to Teran. Local producers also explored the relationship between the four soils and olive oil. For visitors, this creates a clear route: vineyard, cellar, table and landscape connected by one narrative.
